Background

Austen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2019 and Juris Doctor from the University of Western Australia in 2023.

Before joining McLeods, Austen worked as a Legal Intern and Corporate Governance Officer at the City of Perth between 2021 and 2023. Austen initially commenced employment with McLeods as a part-time Law Clerk in January 2023 where he assisted across the governance, planning, prosecutions, and rates and debt recovery teams.

Austen commenced in the full-time role of Law Graduate in July 2023 and was admitted as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 3 May 2024.

Austen currently practices at McLeods in the areas of governance, compliance and enforcement.

Experience

  • Appearing as counsel in Magistrates Court, Supreme Court, and State Administrative Tribunal proceedings, including conducting local government prosecutions.
  • Advising local governments on governance, enforcement, planning and administrative law matters.
  • Researching and preparing intellectual property applications.
  • Preparing documents and providing advice in relation to prosecutions and civil proceedings.
  • Reviewing local laws.
  • Reviewing and providing advice on commercial contracts and property matters.
